Interview Tips for the Job Seeker

Interview job offerAre you a college student looking for your first real job, either to get your career started or to help you pay for the rest of your education? If so, then you are going to be going to job interviews for the first time in your life, and if you are not prepared for the interview, you may end up losing the job to someone who is.

There are many things that you have to keep in mind when going to an interview, and remember, no matter what the job is, you need to go in with a professional attitude and the mindset that you are going to work your butt off and be the best employee the company ever had.

Here are a few tips for the first time job seeker that will help you get your first job:

Dress for success. Even if you are only applying for a part time job, you should dress well for the interview. If you don’t look like you care about your appearance, chances are that you are not going to get the job because employers will not feel that you will care about your job either. Women should wear a skirt or dress, or at least nice dress pants and a blouse. Men should wear dress pants and a nice shirt, and a tie is also a good idea.

Research the company. You will really impress potential employers if you can walk into an interview and show that you know a little bit about the company and what they do. It is important to remember that while this is great, you also need to know when to quit, or it may just seem like you are laying it on thick and sucking up to get the job. A good rule of thumb is to have some questions ready that show you have some knowledge about the company, and also that you want to learn more.

Be early. It is important that you not only be on time for your interview, but that you arrive just a little bit early. Now, you don’t want to get there too early because it just doesn’t look good, and you may even end up annoying people because you are just hanging around. It is best to be five to ten minutes early for an interview. It shows that you are eager to get the job, and that you are prompt, which is very important to employers.

There are other things that you should do to prepare for your first job interview (and every interview you ever go on after this one). It is a good idea to do research and learn what employers ask at interviews, and be prepared with great answers that will show you really want the job. When you are prepared, on time, know about the company, and dress for success, you should have no problem getting that first job.
